This bold patterned tile wall hanging for my home was an intricate labor of love that took approximately six weeks from inception to completion.
It was inspired by travels, memories with family and friends and mementos and materials collected along the way. I see the influence of my parents in this piece more so than in any previous piece of work I have created. My Mom loved bold colors and patterns, she had a talent for needlework and she liked to use non-traditional items as wall hangings. My Dad loved geometric patterns, zero-waste resourcefulness and precision craftsmanship. It is evocative of tile work and contemporary quilts, both of which I consider personalized elements within a home.
Each tile is approximately 2.5”x 2.5” and composed of 12 hand cut rectangles of paper or card stock and one central square. The back of each tile is also finished with paper or card stock integrated on the front. Each element was painstakingly painted on with a liquid adhesive. Each tile has 4 eyelet settings and is tied to the next one with gold string. When I used up the gold string, I hand braided purple cord, from a length of purple fringe that I had on hand. The beaded fringe at the bottom is made of reclaimed beads from multiple sources. This piece was designed with an intentional front and back, but it can be displayed on either side.
It was a very meditative project and I can say with much gratitude, that memories made with so many are woven into the heart of it.
