It was an honor to create this custom collage as one of two commissions, for two sisters honoring their Mom’s memory. The sun image is composed of 24 colorful blooms on a bright white background of Hahnemuhle Museum Etching paper. Each bloom is composed of 7-12 layers of paper and fabric showcasing the vibrant array of hues, textures and patterns available in the materials dedicated for this project. The sisters provided clothing, quilting cloth and personal effects that served as the core of the collages. The way the textiles interacted to create visually pleasing combinations governed the color palettes of the blooms. After selecting fabrics for each color combination, I then chose papers from an assortment of booklets and handwritten notes. The handwritten elements are especially beautiful and powerful. The penmanship is gorgeous and glimpsing the cursive writing emerge from within the petals lends a timeless voice to each piece. Additionally, I provided papers made from recycled garments from India to supplement the bright and whimsical fabrics. I typically assembled two blooms at a time for each sister, mindful of incorporating cloth they had each selected for themselves. After all the blooms were completed, I arranged the compositions of each image with attention to individual placement, symmetry and harmony. It was a sacred duty translating the raw materials I was entrusted with into unique blooms, forming a sun and pair of waves, that represent not only each sister, but also each distinctive relationship. A prevailing sense of peace and contentment was present for the duration of the project and each collage is dynamic and joyful in its expression.
